Marmara White

Marmara Beyazı · Balıkesir

The marble that named the sea.

A white with straight, decided grey banding, quarried on Marmara Island. The quarry has worked — with interruptions — for more than two thousand years: this is the Proconnesian marble of Roman and Byzantine columns. For an Italian client it is the easiest Turkish stone to explain, because its history is the same as that of the monuments down the road.

Typical uses

Columns and solid elements, flooring, restoration, exterior work.

Historical note

Used for the columns of Hagia Sophia and shipped across the Roman Mediterranean as marmor proconnesium.
